Concert: iCE KiNG refreshens international hot spot Belgaleiro! Sat. 19/11/22 @20:00h

iCE KiNG, solo project of Bas L.G. Verdin, is not an easy thing to present, however definite it is. Who has an ear for pure music and something unique at the same time, has come to the right place at last. This pioneer is ‘kicking ice’ since 2003(!), and has been attributed no less than 18 titles so far, from Belgium’s Bravest Bard over Avalon’s Avant-Garde Bard to Victorian Viking Virtuoso. No less than 9 full-length iCE KiNG CD’s have been released so far, while about 2 more are already composed. This and far over 100 concerts later, he ever so passionately delivers his very own style of extremely versatile singing & baritone tuned guitar playing – occasionally keyboard – full of epicism, melody and variety. We daresay: the electric sequel to Romanticism. It is not because he actually transcribes nearly forgotten poems from that era into lyrics, that the music would be from the past or just an accompaniment. Not only is iCE KiNG’s music entirely new, it also evolves beyond the different genres of music as art; and not only is his music an absolute end in itself, it also explores the boundaries of what is expressively and therefore technically possible live by one man. While all this may sound complex, and certainly would be hard to repeat adequately, catchiness and goosebumps are at the very heart of iCE KiNG. If it has to be filed at all, we recommend Bardrock for the Brave and Free. The others? They simply do not know what they are missing… Defying all rules of marketing and mass consumption, iCE KiNG has probably the most diverse audience in the world. Most performances take place in homeland Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. Sung languages include mainly age-old English, but also evenly archaic Dutch, French, German, Swedish, Latin and ancient Greek, knowing that the abundant instrumental & vocal tunes are as universal as they can be. Cerrado inspiratie avond: in gesprek met CSA pionier Fatima Cabral uit Brasilia

De Braziliaanse Cerrado, één van de belangrijkste ecosystemen ter wereld, wordt massaal ontbost door industriële landbouwpraktijken. Ondertussen is ongeveer de helft van de Cerrado al verdwenen. Maar er is ook een tegenbeweging. In 2016 richtte Fátima Cabral Aprospera op, een groep agro-ecologische boeren die agro-ecologie promoten. Samen onderhouden ze 21 CSA’s in hoofdstad Brasília.

Viva Cerrado, de Cerrado werkgroep van Wervel vzw, nodigt je uit voor een live ontmoeting met Fatima Cabral in Leuven. Fátima staat centraal in de film die Louise Amand maakte over alternatieven in de Braziliaanse Cerrado.

We starten om 19u met de film van 3O minuten. Nadien is er gesprek en uitwisseling met Fatima Cabral. Louise Amand zal vertalen van Portugees naar Engels.

Iedereen is welkom. We nodigen expliciet ook boeren en leden van de Vlaamse CSA-beweging uit voor een uitwisseling over lokale antwoorden op een wereldwijd vraagstuk. Fátima bezoekt vooraf ‘CSA de Witte beek’ in Bierbeek, ter kennismaking met de Vlaamse CSA-beweging.

CERRADO INSPIRATION EVENING: IN CONVERSATION WITH CSA PIONEER FATIMA CABRAL FROM BRASILIA

Tuesday 23 August – 19h , café Belgaleiro, Leuven

The Brazilian Cerrado, one of the most important ecosystems in the world, is being massively deforested by industrial farming practices. Meanwhile, about half of the Cerrado has already disappeared. But there is also a counter-movement. In 2016, Fátima founded Cabral Aprospera, a group of agro-ecological farmers who promote agroecology. Together they maintain 21 CSAs in capital Brasília.

Viva Cerrado, the Cerrado working group of Wervel vzw, invites you to a live meeting with Fatima Cabral in Leuven. Fatima is the central figure in the film that Louise Amand made about alternatives in the Brazilian Cerrado.

We start at 19h with the film of 30 minutes. Afterwards there is a conversation and exchange with Fatima Cabral. Louise Amand will translate from Portuguese into English.

Everyone is welcome. We explicitly invite farmers and members of the Flemish CSA movement for an exchange about local answers to a global issue. Fátima will visit beforehand ‘CSA de Witte beek’ in Bierbeek, to get acquainted with the Flemish CSA movement.

Brenda Corijn en Siebe Chau van het Lemmensinstituut Leuven brengen een greep uit het onvergetelijke Bossanova repertoire dat deze wereld een betere plaats heeft gemaakt. Met werken van befaamde componisten zoals João Gilberto, Vinicius de Moraes, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto en vele anderen zullen zij een stuk Braziliaanse ziel naar de Belgaleiro brengen dat de meesten onder ons, ook hier in Europa, niet onberoerd laat.

Aulas de Forró classes

Forró, a music and dance style from the Brazilian north-east … Typical, fun, so different from Samba and at the same time unmistakably Brazilian. A little known entrance into the Brazilian culture! But thanks to Maristela and her free classes which have taken place now for a whole year in the Belgian-Brazilian café Belgaleiro in Leuven, a piece of Brazil has been made accessible that you will not easily find everywhere.
Come and try it out, it’s really worth it!

Oh, and forget about that dancing skill thing. It’s really not about that.
It is one group where everybody works on and shares her/his skills. The basic steps and other forms are repeatedly taught. There are no “levels” and everybody helps each other. The classes take approximatively an hour. Afterwards we put the newly acquired skills into practice during the Forró party!

Iedere eerste donderag van de maand is het tijd voor een violentreffen.

Waar: KuNSTenaarscafé BELGALEIRO, hoek Goudsbloemstraat/Van Wayenberglaan, 3000 Leuven.

Wat: met strijkers en sympathiserende instrumenten – (fiddle) melodieën, airkens en tunes samenspelen.
+ aanleren al (viool-) spelend – met ook aandacht voor onze eigen volksmuziek.

William Gisgand van het Leuvense café Belgaleiro is niet opgezet met de plannen van De Lijn en Aquafin om de straatkant langs de Mgr. Van Waeyenberghlaan te laten verbreden. “Dan verlies ik mijn terras en kunnen de bussen hier nog sneller rijden.” Volgens schepen Robbeets (sp.a) hoeft het zo ver niet te komen.

Coffee by a real barista

Coffee is no big deal? Because after all it’s just hot water pressed through milled coffee beans by a machine, right?
This becomes something completely different if you order a coffee from a real barista. There are so many different recipes that mentioning them all would exceed the limits of the menu.
The most obvious like latte macchiato or cappuccino are in there of course, but …
